This short film depicts how a small Canadian city, bearing the name of Stratford and by a river Avon, created its own renowned Shakespearean theatre. The film tells how the idea grew, how a famous British director, international stars and Canadian talent were recruited, and how the Stratford Shakespearean Festival finally became a triumphant reality.
A Life in Stages provides a window into the remarkable career of Des McAnuff, one of the theatre’s most prolific and versatile artists. The director of such hits as Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy and Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays, and recognized for his artistic leadership of La Jolla Playhouse in California and the Stratford Festival, Des is also an accomplished writer and musician who began his career writing plays and composing scores.
Lawren Harris is an artist of international stature, a giant of Canadian culture, a founder of the Group of Seven and leader in the emergence of Canada’s most famous school of painting. Our northern wilderness landscapes of tangled and brilliant colour, wide blue expanses of lake and sky, majestic arctic icebergs and expansive mountain vistas were captured by Harris in masterpieces that have become icons of Canada’s visual identity.
